I am thrilled to find this blog. I recently discovered your podcast and it has helped me more than anything else to conquer clutter. I have many books and have done a lot of research on the topic of hoarding/decluttering and you speak to me the most. I was prepared to type notes from your podcast so I can continually refer to a hard copy of your ideas until they became engraved in my memory. I like both podcasts and blogs - podcasts I can listen to over and over....blogs provide me the written copy which is how I learn best as I am a visual learner. I am looking to send you a contribution for this excellent information.

How "ruffled" the edges can be depends on your scanner, of course. I am less than 100% satisfied with the paper feeder on my Canon DR-2080C in that regard. But they don't make that model any more anyway, so maybe it's been improved on newer models.

I don't go to a lot of trouble to "tag" my images for searching, but I do use my operating system's folders and filenames to keep things organized. For example: \my documents\money\amex\receipts\2011\20110208 Costco.tif

My DR-2080C can handle any document size and shape up to US legal size with no problems. E-mail me privately for additional details.

Rich, I enjoyed the article. Thanks for posting it. I have a few questions. Do the sheets of paper have to be perfectly straight, or can the scanner handle a certain amount of ruffled edges? Sometimes in filing cabinets pages get ruffled.

Secondly, did you have any way to search or otherwise retrieve the information after you scanned it in? If you needed a particular document, how did you find it? Was it a lot of work to name or tag images, or did you have to spend a lot of time looking at a slide show of pictures until you found the one you wanted?

Was all your paper letter-sized? Did you have anything to scan that wasn't standard sized, like greeting cards, business cards, handwritten notes, etc. If so, I'd be interested in hearing how that went.

Thanks!
